My Role

Hi Mary - Love that you’re sharing these career journey stories. I so needed it when I was in college.
I coach individuals and create personal-growth products to help high-achieving women find and do more meaningful, enjoyable work. Before this, I spent 12 years in the software industry, spanning many functions, from Software Engineer at Boeing to Head of Product at the fast-growing tech startup Flywheel.

What I love most about my role

I love that being an effective coach requires me to continuously grow myself. Nothing is more important to me than my own emotional and spiritual growth.

How I define success

What’s been helpful for me is to redefine success in terms of how I feel. I’m successful when I feel present, connected, authentic, joyful, growing. And, in my experience, it all hinges on being present.

The best piece of business advice I ever received was

Don’t believe everything you think. Noticing and questioning my thoughts has helped me have a more productive relationship with my fellow department head, leave my 6-figure career to start my own biz, be a better coach to my clients, improve my relationship with my dad, feel closer to my husband… I’m a thoughts and feelings nerd, if you hadn’t noticed. :-)

What would I tell my younger self

Nothing; I would be present and listen fully to her. It’s such a gift.

What 2B Bolder mean to me

To me, to be bolder is to continually bring your desires to life. I’ve had many experiences where I put what I want on hold, often because it didn’t seem feasible (starting a business) or because I was afraid of what others would think (cutting my hair.) This applies in teeny tiny and big ways: from lighting a candle at dinner to running an ultramarathon.

Years of Experience

15 years of post-college professional experience

I recommend you focus on developing these 3 skills to succeed in a role like mine

planning (projects), analyzing (finding root cause), coaching (one-on-one creative analysis and action planning) - It’s interesting how some of the skills that made me effective in my software career are key skills as a coach, too.
